Editor’s Note: The following blog was written by one of our interns, Kiley Sherman. Kiley has been interning with us for the duration of her spring semester and her work has primarily focused on community support.

For all internships, we try to ensure that our interns are working on projects that are of interest to them. Because of this, we wanted to have Kiley work on something that was directly related to her major and interests. One of the projects she ended up working on was our Self-Care in the Park event, which was primarily focused on providing the resources and space to participate in some simple self-care activities. Along with playing a significant role in the development of the event, Kiley also assisted us by preparing an informational poster on community care and self-care (see image below).

To finish up her time with us, we asked her to write a short blog post introducing herself and telling us about some of her interests as they relate to her major in community health.

My name is Kiley Sherman. I’m a soon-to-be graduate from Lenoir-Rhyne University. I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Community Health. I chose Community Health because I have a passion for helping others and finding the best solution for community issues. I’m very passionate about equality and diversity. I want the world to see the beauty in God’s creation. We are all human and deserve to be treated as such. I think the gender wage gap needs to be addressed because women are still getting paid less than men in many occupations. There is also a need for diversity in workplaces and for people of color to be heard and recognized for their work.

In today’s society, there is social injustice, police brutality, and discrimination that is publicly being displayed to the world though social media. I believe in change and the world needs a lot of change. We all as humans need to educate ourselves on what is happening to the minorities throughout the world. Being a biracial woman is very important to me because minorities are the majority and we all need to realize that we are not all treated fairly in this world. Racism and discrimination still exist in this world and this is why we need change. I strongly believe that I can make a difference working within the community to see that there are many disparities that need to be noticed and changed.
