Craft Club (Formerly Free Community Art Activity)

  • Eugenia H. Young Memorial Library 104 Howie Drive Shelby, North Carolina, 28150 United States (map)

Come join us for our new CRAFT CLUB! Formerly our free community art activity, Craft Club takes place on the first Tuesday of each month (except on holidays).

We will still be meeting in the Makerspace at the Eugenia H. Young Memorial Library.

What is Craft Club?

Craft Club is our rebranded Free Community Art Activity. Previously, we brought one craft per month for folks to participate in. This program has had a great run, but we felt it was limiting to the creativity of the people who participated. After some careful consideration and feedback from our community, we decided to transform this program into an open craft night!

We invite anyone (all ages are welcome, kids under 13 must be accompanied by an adult), to come out and create with us! Here’s what to expect:

  • You will still have access to an art instructor with a lot of experience in a space that is supportive and compassionate about mental health.

  • Bring your works in progress, left over or recyclable materials, and get creative by doing your own thing!

  • MHA and the library will still provide craft supplies, so there’s no need to bring your own supplies unless you want to work on a specific project.

  • We will still have some guided craft activities, depending on materials available.

  • Work alongside other creatives to bounce ideas off of or ask for help with something you’re working on.

  • This is an opportunity to do what you want creatively!

How does art support mental health?

We’ve always gotten this question when it comes to this program, so let’s break it down:

  • Creative outlets support brain health

  • Learning new skills, even if you think you’re “bad” at art, is essential for developing a resilient brain (we don’t believe in being “bad” at art, we want this to be an opportunity to play and experience without judgement or criticism)

  • Creative expression without judgement can improve your mood

  • Being in community with other people is important for your mental health, so this is the perfect place to be around others without the pressure of planning an outing or paying for services

Join us for a free activity right at home in Shelby, great for people of all ages!
